At Vico Pancellorum

We have been meaning to visit this village for years.  The name intrigues me, and seems made for a Victorian nonsnse song, perhaps including the rhyme "heedrum-hodrum"!  The village is much depleted of people now, with many for sale signs in evidence - it does however boast a restaurant with very good reviews on Tripadvisor!

Vico Pancellorum, showing the inaccessibility which is causing depopulation
The steep climb up the main street
House number
Cellar doorway
A rare level piazza
The street showing central surface drainage system - quite unusual
In these villages, the Romanesque church comes as standard ...

  1. like you, we've always been intrigued by this name. I just looked it up, and what I found is: "The name Vico Pancellorum may have come from ‘panis celorum’ – heavenly bread, but more probably from a type of grass, ‘panicellum’ which grew in the area."
