Lucca

We have been wanting to do a bit of cycling round Lucca for a while - it's too hilly for us here in Barga.  So, on a whim, we went off on Wednesday for a night in Lucca.  Our B&B was in one of the buildings which make up the Piazza del Anfiteatro, on the site of the Roman amphitheatre.  We had a great view over the piazza - great for people-watching!

Then we hired bikes and cycled out of town along the banks of the Serchio on a cycleway which forms part of the Via Francigena, which is the ancient pilgrims' way connecting Canterbury with Rome.

Just arrived in Lucca, and enjoying the view of the anfiteatro from our window - note Barbara in centre wearing green jacket - quite a good likeness, I think ...
A bit more close up - on the cycle path by the river
More river ...
The Serchio has a bad flooding record - these flood protection measures are presumably the sort of thing now being contemplated in the UK
A colony of little egrets relaxing
On the way back from our meal, in the old market square, we glimpsed the weird spectacle of the holm oaks at the top of the Torre Guinigi - they, or their predecessors, have been growing there for 500 years!
